NOTES AND WHATNOT CAN GO HERE, I GUESS???
[attr="class","sau4"]The idea of safety is nothing more than a fantasy conjured in the minds of fragile humans such as ourselves. If you think about it, our species is nothing special outside of our ability to adapt – there are thousands upon thousands of animals out there who could crush us as easily as we do insects, the most microscopic of organisms can have our immune system running itself dizzy, and, in most cases, our own minds will stop at nothing to beat us down from the inside. As a whole, we may be some of, if not the most successful creatures on this planet we call Earth, but on an individual level, there is no such thing as “safety”. We are insignificant and weak, at best, and it's only a matter of time before one thing or another does away with you, with me, with the crazed man down the street. We're born in death, we live in death – it's no wonder that we all meet our end, whether it be from an illness, being crushed or stabbed or something equally grotesque, of having our bodies give out on us at one point or another. The poor, deluded prince in the Masque of the Red Death was foolish enough to think he could cheat the odds by hiding himself away, by distracting himself with fanciful parties; and, in the end, what did he have to show for it? A party suite full of dead guests, that's what! Even ol' Tom Walker believed he would be safe if he could cheat his deal with the devil, only to have the man himself whisk him off on a horse to never be seen again! You can hide behind your parents as a child, but they can only handle being shot through the head as much as you. You can lock yourself away, but even if the outside world cannot get to you, the inside can take its place. In short, I believe that a person is only as safe as they are lucky, and that any semblance of “safety” is nothing but – well – an illusion.
